How far out of Accra do you want to drive today?
Almost every tour in this country leaves from Accra, so the real choice is distance. An hour up the Akuapem ridge, two hours east to the falls, or forty minutes north to the zebras.

Accra is a walking city that nobody tells you to walk.
Jamestown under the lighthouse, the fishing beach at low tide, Makola at full volume, then jollof and highlife in Osu after dark. A guide turns four hours of traffic into the best day of the trip.
The coast where the Atlantic crossing began.
Between the sixteenth and the nineteenth century, people were held in the dungeons beneath the forts at Cape Coast and Elmina, bathed at the river at Assin Manso, and put onto ships they never came back from. The buildings still stand on that shore, and they are open, with guides who live in the towns around them.
Most itineraries reach the coast from Accra in a single long day. Many travellers, particularly those coming from the diaspora, give it two, and keep the second one clear afterwards. Guides ask that visitors do not photograph inside the holding cells, and the dungeons are not suitable for young children.
In Kumasi the cloth is still made by hand, one strip at a time.
Bonwire sits half an hour out of Kumasi and has woven kente since the seventeenth century. Watch a four-inch strip come off the loom, then Manhyia Palace for whose cloth it was, and Kejetia market for everything else in West Africa.

The Naming Ceremony
Eight days after a birth, a Ghanaian child is brought outside and given its name by an elder, who touches water and then strong drink to its lips so it learns the difference between truth and a lie. Families in Accra and Kumasi hold the same rite for visitors returning from the diaspora, white cloth and all. It is arranged with the family in advance, never on the morning.

The Cocoa Farm
Tetteh Quarshie carried cocoa beans home from Fernando Po in 1876 and planted them at Mampong; within thirty years Ghana was the largest cocoa producer on earth. His farm is still there, an hour above Accra. Split a pod, taste the white pulp around the wet bean, watch the fermenting heaps under banana leaf. Main harvest runs roughly October to January.

The Tafi Atome Monkeys
The mona monkeys in the forest at Tafi Atome, up in the Volta hills, were held sacred long before anyone used the word conservation, and killing one is still forbidden by the village. They come down to hand height for fruit in the early morning and are gone by the heat of the day. The village runs the sanctuary itself.

Ghana’s rain arrives in May and it arrives hard.
The big rains fall through May and June, with a lighter run in September and October, and December to February is harmattan, when Saharan dust hazes the whole country. Rain here is short and heavy rather than all day, so the answer is usually to move the outdoor half of the day rather than lose it. None of these care what the sky is doing.
